Native Son: Steve “Silk” Hurley to receive 3YB House of Excellence Award

Posted on Updated on

Pride of the Southeast Side!

One goal of the 3YB House Fest is to highlight the role of Chicago’s Southeast Side as a breeding ground for serious House Music talent, and recognize the significant contributions to the genre made by those who grew up there. Some of our hometown heroes include:

Radio personality Khris “First Lady” Hutchinson, and her husband, Foxxxhole/Sirius XM DJ Hugo H. (both gracing the decks at House Fest); Chosen Few DJs pioneers, brothers Tony Hatchett and Andre Hatchett; and disco and rare groove ambassador, Sadar Bahar.

And one of the brightest stars in that galaxy is the one and only Steve “Silk” Hurley, whom we are proud to name as the recipient of our inaugural 3YB “House of Excellence” Award this Saturday! Launching this year, the award is given annually to salute a member of the house music community for their accomplishments and contributions to the culture, music and industry.

From his roots as a teenage DJ on the Southeast Side to his rise as a pioneering House Music artist–his early hits with J.M. Silk topped dance charts worldwide–to his evolution into a ground-breaking producer, remixer and musical curator, Steve has leveraged his lifelong love of music to create a highly influential and fruitful career.

3YB-Steve Hurley projects photoHis work with a constellation of iconic artists–Michael Jackson, Prince, Crystal Waters, CeCe Peniston and Ann Nesby among them–has garnered him a host of accolades, including four GRAMMY nominations, an ASCAP Writer Award, plus top producer and remixer honors from Billboard magazine, British Charity Awards and the Winter Music Conference. Steve’s resume also includes managing his own record labels; producing songs for film soundtracks, including To Wong Foo and Love & Basketball; appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show; and producing the “Oprah’s Pop Star Challenge” album, as well as his twice-weekly “Old SKool/New Skool Remix” on the nationally syndicated radio show, the Tom Joyner Show.

“Our neighborhood gave birth to a lot of talented individuals who have really moved house music forward, here and around the world,” says 3YB co-founder, Joseph Porter, a/k/a “Pepe”. We’re giving Steve this first ‘House of Excellence’ Award to honor him for building and sustaining an incredible level of success in the music industry, while remaining true to his Chicago roots and a wonderful, genuine person.”

And we’re looking forward to celebrating you, old friend!

Passing on the torch: Master Mix Academy teaches kids DJ craft @ 3YB House Fesst

This Saturday, we’re not just partying, but passing on the torch!

3YB-MMA logo-blackFor our inaugural 3YB House Fest on August 22, 2015, we’re excited to partner with Master Mix Academy to offer hands-on activities for the next generation of house music DJs, dancers and fans!

From 4 PM to 6 PM in the Kids Corral area, kids and teens can learn digital DJ and virtual studio music production techniques. The DJ booth will be led by Dave Maze, founder and executive director of Master Mix Academy.

Just what is Master Mix Academy? It is a STEM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), not-for-profit DJ and music production for youth development program based in Chicago. Launched in 2009 to counter the lack of music programs that focused on urban arts and technology education, its mission is to introduce children and young adults–through hands on educational opportunities–to the urban Disc Jockey tradition and art form.3YB-MMA photo-3 girls

Academy programs enhance core educational skills, including critical and analytical thinking, in relationship to science and technology in the electronic music industry. Since its inception, Master Mix has provided DJ, performing arts and virtual studio technology educational programming to more than 10,000 students in the Chicago area.

So, bring the kiddies with you to the 3YB House Fest, and share the music–and the party–you love with them! Kids 12 and under are free, and teens and seniors are only $5! Advance sale adult tickets (from $10 + fee for General Admission, to $30 + fee for VIP) are available right here.
